The statement, which was jointly signed by the ambassadors reads, “Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is a beacon of Hope. On behalf of every young Nigerian girl, we want to appreciate him and the entire Nigerian Senate for sponsoring this wonderful bill. To us, this is what people oriented legislation is all about.

“We cannot overemphasized the importance and the greater good that this bill will bring to the entire society once assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari. This will guarantee and provide security to every girl child against all forms of sexual harassment.

“We are therefore calling on Mr. President to give urgent consideration to the importance of this bill to every Nigerian girl child and the larger society, as a father and leader of the nation and give his immediate assent as well as order the total enforcement of the law across all States of the federation. We believe in his wisdom to do the needful especially now that cases of sexual violence are rising exponentially across the country.

“This effort will help redirect the focus of the youths (male and female) to become societal drivers of positive change, and not as instruments or subjects of pains and torments. As stakeholders in the advocacy for a drug free society, leading in the “Say No To Rape” Campaign in Nigeria, we will continue to support efforts aimed at achieving the goal of a better society for all.”

Specifically, the objective of the bill includes to “create equal learning opportunities for students of tertiary institutions in an atmosphere devoid of sexual harassment and to promote ethical standards of education and respect for human dignity in tertiary educational institutions by providing for the protection of students against sexual harassment by educators in tertiary educational institutions, prohibition of sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary educational institutions; and redress of complaints of sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary educational institutions.”
