Joel-Onowakpo, DG NCAC, Others Decorated as SOCOCOVID Ambassadors, Signed National COVID-19 Support Register

The Society Committee Against COVID-19 (SOCOCOVID) on Thursday, decorated the former Coordinator of Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) in Delta, Edo and Rivers States, Hon. Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, and the Director-General of the National Council for Arts and Culture and President, World Crafts Council, African Region, Otunba Segun Runsewe as SOCOCOVID Ambassadors following their contributions in support of citizens affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

Joel-Onowakpo, who participated in the ceremony through ZOOM virtual application, was physically represented by his Personal Assistant, Endurance Edafewotu who signed the National COVID-19 Support Register; a signature of Care and Hope on his behalf.

The Register was also signed by other prominent Nigerians such as, Chief Emmanuel Uduaghan Oritsejulomi who was represented by Chief Uyoyou Edhekpo for his immense contribution in assisting families affected by the pandemic.

When launched, the register shall be displayed at the National Assembly, State Assemblies, Tertiary Institutions, National Archives, Foreign Embassies and High Commissions in Nigeria, Nigeria Foreign Missions abroad and in Diaspora Chapters.

The National Coordinator, SOCOCOVID, Dr. Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, said in his opening remarks that SOCOCOVID has recognised the roles, kind contributions and substantial supports made by noble Nigerians and NGO in corroborating the efforts of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19. Adding that the combined efforts of both Non-Governmental Organisations and the private sectors during this critical period of Coronavirus pandemic has been overwhelming.

According to him, ‘’our organisation is not ignorant of the your substantial contributions and programmes organized to educate and sensitize Nigerians on the various dangers COVID-19 pose to our existence which has formed a major rallying point of eradicating the disease from Nigeria.

“SOCOCOVID is a Non-governmental Organisation that is putting resources together in a bid to flatten the curve of the spread of the deadly pandemic called COVID-19.

“SOCOCOVID is among the first Non-Governmental groups to pay fines for release of five (5) inmates from Suleja Correctional Detention Centre in line with the decongestion order of President Buhari and re-unite them with their families.”

Joel-Onowakpo thanked the National Coordinator, Dr Kenneth Ibe-Kalu and the members of the SOCOCOVID for the rare privilege to be honoured as a SOCOCOVID Ambassador; an Ambassador to help promote the existence of human race by lending supports, love and care when it is most needed.

Meanwhile, in her keynote address, the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen expressed her gratitude to the SOCOCOVID for the great initiative to undertake such a laudable project. She pleaded and solicited the support of the idea by all Nigerians and to always remember to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols of the federal government at all times while also admonishing all participants to lend a helping hand to the less privileged Nigerians in this critical time.

On his part, the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire who was ably represented by Dr. Godwin Ntadam stated that the National COVID-19 Support Register is a welcome development. He advised SOCOCOVID to ensure that all frontline Doctors and Health workers in the battle against COVID-19 should have their names written on the National COVID-19 Support Register.

According to Dr. Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, those required to sign the register were persons or organizations that made considerable impact on the society in the fight against COVID-19.
